Friday, September 4th, 2009 8:50 pm

Davenport Police Cpl. Mike Schneider said he talked to the woman who crashed her Dodge Durango early Friday at Brady Street and Palmer Drive.
Schneider said the woman told him that she was messing with her cell phone and lost control while heading north on Brady Street.
The vehicle took down a utility pole and then sheared off a fire hydrant at Brady Street and Palmer Drive. The SUV then felled a sign for Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and came to rest under a tree in the yard of the church. The woman fled the vehicle toward Central High School. She later called the police station.
The driver was issued traffic citations for striking fixtures and failure to maintain control. She did have a valid driver’s license and insurance.

There have been so many times I or someone I’ve known have come close to bad accidents because either they or someone else was messing with their cell phones. Those in my family who are driving quite a bit all have hands-free setups of some sort. When traffic is bad they immediately get off the phone so they can concentrate better on what’s going on. I feel and hands-free conversation is no better or worse than a conversation between the driver and passenger. It’s just without someone who may distract you when you are talking. How many folks don’t turn and look or at least glance occasionally at the person we’re talking with in the vehicle? When on the road family has the time to call, normally they are without that because of whatever reasons they have. ……………I’ve been cut off, almost clipped, and one time even run off the road by someone using a cell phone.
